THE BALCONY OVERLOOKING THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

Browse the area

The Le Manie plateau represents a unique geological contrast within the Finale Outdoor Region. Unlike the dense, alpine forest networks of the high backcountry, this coastal plateau sits directly above the sea, delivering some of the most scenic and universally recognized mountain bike trails in Europe.

Le Manie holds massive significance in mountain biking history. It is the permanent home of the legendary 24h of Finale Ligure endurance race and has repeatedly served as the decisive final arena for the Enduro World Series (EWS) stages and the Trophy of Nations, where the world’s fastest racers battled on technical lines dropping straight to the beaches of Varigotti.

Area

Le Manie is a coastal limestone plateau situated just east of downtown Finale Ligure and directly above the historic village of Varigotti. Because of its structural layout, it serves as the ultimate link between easy-rolling cross-country trails, technical E-MTB climbing circuits, and high-stakes coastal enduro tracks.

Terrain

The ground composition here is completely distinct from the high mountain areas. It features a unique mix of fast-drying red soil, loose sand, fine gravel, and rough, high-friction white limestone bedrock. The high concentration of small stones on the top surface creates a rolling layer that keeps your tires searching for traction, but provides extreme mechanical grip on the solid rock faces.

Trail character

Riding styles vary dramatically across the plateau. The top of the plateau offers flat, fast-rolling, and family-friendly singletracks that serve as a perfect introduction to trail riding in the area. However, as soon as the lines drop over the edge toward the coast, the character shifts into steep, raw, and highly exposed technical descents with substantial vertical drops off the sides of the trails.

Best time to ride

SPRING / AUTUMN (MARCH TO MAY & SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER)

The absolute prime riding months. Ground moisture levels help pack down the loose sandy soil, providing maximum cornering traction on the coastal ridges.

SUMMER (JUNE TO AUGUST)

While the midday sun is intense due to the low altitude and exposed coastal scrub vegetation, Le Manie’s geographical layout makes it a favorite for early morning or late evening sunset rides, ending with a swim directly at the beach.

WINTER (DEZEMBER TO FEBRUARY)

Le Manie is the ultimate winter hideout. The sandy terrain absorbs moisture instantly and dries faster than any other zone in the region. Due to the immediate proximity of the sea, temperatures remain mild, and the trails stay entirely snow-free and perfectly rideable all winter long.

How to ride Finale Ligure

The trail network is accessed via a combination of public municipal roads, authorized fire tracks, and private shuttle routes. Independent access via pedaling is feasible, though the elevation gain and trail density often necessitate motorized transport for logistical efficiency. Trail maintenance and signposting are managed by local outdoor associations in collaboration with regional land management authorities.

shuttle service

While the plateau itself is easily accessible via public asphalt roads, using a professional Finale Ligure MTB shuttle allows riders to maximize their gravity output. Shuttles efficiently manage the steep vertical climb back up from the coast after you complete high-energy descents like DH Men or Briga, saving your legs for technical descending.

guided tours

Navigating the plateau can be deceptive due to the dense network of crossing hiking paths and hidden trailheads. Joining a guided tour with a local instructor is highly recommended to seamlessly connect the fast loops of the 24h course with the highly technical EWS lines without losing momentum or accidentally dropping down wrong cliff faces.

private experiences

Riding with a local MTB guide is the best way to discover hidden trails, avoid navigation issues, and make the most of your time on the bike.

BIKE RENT

The sharp limestone and loose gravel of Le Manie put heavy demands on equipment. Utilizing a specialized bike rental (Fahrradverleih) in Finale Ligure ensures you are equipped with robust All-Mountain, Enduro, or E-MTB setups featuring reinforced tire casings and the precise tire pressure needed to handle the jagged rock slabs safely.

Plan your ride

The riding experience in the Finale Ligure Outdoor Region is shaped by far more than its trail network. Geology, elevation, climate and centuries of human history have combined to create one of Europe’s most diverse natural mountain biking destinations. Understanding how these elements influence the landscape helps riders choose the right terrain, anticipate trail conditions and appreciate what makes each Trail Area unique.

faq

Yes, the top sections of the plateau and the main loops of the 24h trail are excellent for intermediate riders and advanced beginners looking for flat, predictable terrain. However, the steep downhill tracks dropping to the coast (DH Men / DH Woman) are strictly reserved for experienced riders with solid bike control.

The maritime soil composition contains high levels of sand and gravel. Unlike the heavy clay or deep dirt found in the dense valleys, Le Manie drains water almost instantly, providing great traction and hero dirt even right after a heavy Mediterranean rainstorm.

Le Manie is an absolute paradise for E-MTBs. The combination of technical, punchy climbs like Andrassa, wide fire roads, and fast singletrack links allows E-bike riders to easily loop the entire plateau multiple times without relying on mechanical uplifts.
