THE DIVERSE GRAVITY BACKBONE OF CALICE LIGURE
Browse the area
The Calice Ligure riding zone represents one of the most complete and multi-faceted sectors within the entire Finale Outdoor Region. Geographically positioned in the lush valley right behind the coast, this area bridges the gap between the high-altitude alpine ridges and the coastal singletracks. It is a zone celebrated for its incredible environmental transition, taking riders from deep, loam-rich chestnut forests down into classic Mediterranean brushland.
Calice is legendary for offering the perfect balance between pure mechanical flow and unforgiving technicality. Its trails are highly varied, making it a favorite training ground for both professional enduro racers who need to test their endurance on long, diverse descents, and enthusiast riders searching for perfectly shaped berms, high-speed compressions, and natural rollercoasters.
Area
The sector is centered around the expansive backcountry basin of Calice Ligure, extending upward toward the Madonna della Guardia ridge. Its strategic location makes it easily accessible via shuttle or pedal-assist loops from Finalborgo, serving as a core component of full-day enduro itineraries.
Terrain
The geology of Calice is uniquely varied due to its elevation span. The upper sections feature rich, organic forest loam and dark dirt that retains moisture beautifully, creating highly predictable traction. As the trails descend toward the valley floor, the soil mixes with hard clay, loose shale, and fixed abrasive limestone structures, demanding a quick adaptation to changing grip levels.
Trail character
Diversity is the defining character of Calice. It seamlessly mixes high-speed flow segments where you pump the terrain for speed, with heavy-duty rock gardens that require precise line choices and suspension management. The sheer length of the descents here adds a physical endurance element that separates Calice from shorter, punchier coastal sectors.

Best time to ride
SPRING / AUTUMN (MARCH TO MAY & SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER)
The peak riding window for Calice Ligure. The dirt quality is at its absolute best during these months, offering incredible mechanical grip (“hero dirt”) through the high-speed berms of Kill Bill, while ambient temperatures are ideal for tackling the long descents without overheating.
SUMMER (JUNE TO AUGUST)
The high-elevation starts and thick forest canopies of the upper lines provide a cooler environment compared to the open coastal terraces. However, during dry summer spells, the high-traffic sections can develop brake bumps, and the lower clay segments become dusty, requiring a smooth braking approach.
WINTER (DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY)
Calice dries relatively quickly after rain, making it a solid winter option. While the lower, sun-exposed tracks like Cacciatore remain dry and high in grip, the deeper forest sections on the upper ridges can retain moisture longer, turning the dirt slick and requiring careful line selection over wet roots.
How to ride Finale Ligure
The trail network is accessed via a combination of public municipal roads, authorized fire tracks, and private shuttle routes. Independent access via pedaling is feasible, though the elevation gain and trail density often necessitate motorized transport for logistical efficiency. Trail maintenance and signposting are managed by local outdoor associations in collaboration with regional land management authorities.

shuttle service
Because the descents in Calice are exceptionally long and drop deep into the valley floor, using a professional Finale Ligure MTB shuttle service is the most efficient way to experience the sector. Shuttling allows you to save your legs from long tarmac climbs and maximize your gravity runtime on Madonna della Guardia and Kill Bill.

guided tours
With such a vast array of trail variations and connecting fire roads, a local guided tour is highly recommended. An experienced guide will help you connect the best lines seamlessly, manage group energy levels across the long descents, and ensure you drop into the technical segments of Cacciatore with the right speed.

BIKE RENT
The long, continuous descents and rapid transitions from high-speed flow to heavy rock gardens put massive stress on tires and braking systems. Choosing a high-end Enduro or E-MTB from a local bike rental (Fahrradverleih) shop ensures your bike is fitted with powerful, fade-resistant brakes and durable tire casings necessary for long descents.
Plan your ride
The riding experience in the Finale Ligure Outdoor Region is shaped by far more than its trail network. Geology, elevation, climate and centuries of human history have combined to create one of Europe’s most diverse natural mountain biking destinations. Understanding how these elements influence the landscape helps riders choose the right terrain, anticipate trail conditions and appreciate what makes each Trail Area unique.
