Browse the area
The NATO Base is located at the highest point reachable by the shuttle services operating in the Finale Outdoor Region. This makes it the preferred destination for maximizing descent time and for long-distance mountain bike loops. From here, riders can tackle descents with 800-1000 meters of elevation loss down towards the coast or Finalborgo.
The trails that start from the Former NATO Base area are among the most famous and regularly feature in the Enduro World Series (EWS) and now the UCI Enduro World Cup races:
Base Nato Trail: This trail shares the name of the location. It is known for being very flowy, fast, and characterized by berms, small jumps (natural and artificial), and short rocky sections. It is a “must-ride” for those seeking a mix of speed and fun.
Sentiero H (or H Trail): Named after the old helicopter landing pad. It is a longer and more complex descent, offering an incredible variety of terrain: single track, fast sections, steep banks, and technical passages, making it extremely popular.
Madre Natura: Highly appreciated for its smooth surface and flow, ideal for a warm-up or for those looking for a smoother experience.
The NATO Base area is not just a historical point of interest, but the true logistical and technical peak from which the mountain biking soul of Finale Ligure radiates, offering riders the unique opportunity to descend on World Cup tracks.
Area
The Base NATO / Din Trail Zone is one of Finale’s best-known riding areas, offering a dense network of classic enduro trails connected by historic military roads. Its variety of trail styles makes it a popular destination for both guided tours and independent riders.
Terrain
Expect compact forest soil, limestone rock, rocky slabs, loose stone sections and occasional roots. The terrain alternates between shaded woodland and open rocky hillsides, providing constantly changing riding conditions.
Trail character
The zone combines flowing trails such as Rollercoaster and Toboga di Canova with more natural and technical descents including Kill Bill II and Madonna della Guardia. Long descents, varied rhythm and multiple line choices define the riding experience.

Best time to ride
Spring / Autumn: These periods offer stable temperatures and consistent ground moisture, representing the optimal timeframe for trail usage.
Summer: High temperatures are common in coastal zones. Usage is typically concentrated in higher-elevation zones or shaded forest areas to mitigate heat exposure.
Winter: Environmental conditions remain stable and conducive to riding. Precipitation levels are generally lower than in other alpine destinations, and trails remain accessible throughout the winter season.
How to ride Finale Ligure
The trail network is accessed via a combination of public municipal roads, authorized fire tracks, and private shuttle routes. Independent access via pedaling is feasible, though the elevation gain and trail density often necessitate motorized transport for logistical efficiency. Trail maintenance and signposting are managed by local outdoor associations in collaboration with regional land management authorities.
